Advances in biotechnology especially easy access to rapid and inexpensive genome sequencing have unlocked the ability to rapidly read and edit the genomes of microbial strains and turn them into cellular factories capable of manufacturing a wide range of commercially important products. Bioengineered microbes can also act as the product themselves, such as is the case with crop protection agents such as Bacillus thuringiensis or the many fungi used in the food industry.

Isomerase is a leader in a range of bacterial and fungal research companies and works with a wide variety of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes – including many strains successfully used for industrial production. Isomerase has developed a range of proprietary in-house chassis strains and built an extensive proprietary collection of more than 20,000 strains (including extremophiles) which can be used as the basis of a new project. Additionally, we are experienced in accessing patent strains and other commercial collections.

How can Isomerase help your microbial strain research project?

Many partners approach Isomerase to source and/or develop a new strain – including challenging strains like myxobacteria.

Ten years ago, when Isomerase was founded actinomycetes, such as Streptomyces spp. and Saccharopolyspora spp. were our core expertise, over the years since then Isomerase has gained extensive experience through the successful completion of projects requiring the use of a diverse range of microbes.

Example microbial strains we work with

Examples of microbial strains we work with include:

Rich sources of small molecules and biocatalytic enzymes:

Easy to bioengineer and culture enabling efficient peptide and protein production:

Prokaryotic

  • Streptomyces
  • Bacillus
  • Corynebacterium
  • Pseudomonas
  • Mycobacterium
  • Myxobacterium

and many others.

  • Escherichia

Eukaryotic

  • Basidiomycetes
  • Aspergillus
  • Trichoderma
  • Candida
  • Yarrowia

and many others.
  • Saccharomyces
  • Pichia

Example microbial strain projects

Example microbial strain projects include:

  • Microbial strain improvement – for example, to increase the productivity of a strain or to remove unwanted contaminants or side products.
  • Pathway manipulation – aimed at generating a novel small molecule by tailoring microbial biosynthesis.
  • Sourcing rare strains – from global culture collections including sourcing patent strains, confirming their viability and ability to produce compounds of interest then developing a process to produce the target product.
  • Bioinformatics-guided discovery – using genomic data to suggest likely producers of a target compound, sourcing strains and process development to deliver target products.
  • Fungal engineering – generating genetic manipulation methods for a basidiomycete enabling manipulation of a biosynthetic gene cluster and generation of analogues of a target natural product.
